One in five car buyers ready for an electric vehicle, latest research shows

Jan,14,2011
Nineteen percent of drivers surveyed by IBM's Institute for Business Value (IBV) said that they were either "very likely" or "likely" to consider purchasing an electric-only vehicle when shopping for a new car. This is notable, given that 42 percent of drivers know only "a little" about EVs or have "only heard of them.”

Thirty percent of drivers surveyed said that they would consider switching to an EV that got 100 miles or less per charge. Current EVs get about 50 to 100 miles per charge.

And 40 percent of drivers said they would pay up to 20 percent more for an electric-only vehicle compared with a similarly-featured gas-, diesel, or hybrid-powered vehicle, with 27 percent saying they would pay 10 percent more and 13 percent saying they would pay 20 percent more.

The results of this research bodes well for the emerging EV industry in the Bay Area. Most notable is Tesla Motors based in Palo Alto. Tesla is currently retrofitting a portion of the shuttered NUMMI plant in Fremont to manufacture it's upcoming Model S sedan. Other local companies involved in the burgeoning EV business include Santa Rosa's ZAP (manufacturer of small electric vehicles), CODA Automotive who has announced its intentions to assemble electric vehicles in Benicia, and Palo Alto's Better Place, an EV battery infrastructure solution provider.

Nevertheless, the price of a home charging installation often required to support an EV could pose an obstacle to EV adoption, according to the study. Only 13 percent of drivers said they would consider spending more than $1,000 to retrofit their residence to support recharging of an electric vehicle. According to industry estimates, retrofitting to a 240 volt outlet accessible to vehicles averages between $1,000 and $2,000.

In addition, two-thirds of consumers expect a price discount on their electricity for charging at home overnight. This expectation could place increasing focus on utilities for time-based pricing to encourage home charging, or more public charging will be required if an electricity discount is not available.

Home charging is considered important to the success of EVs. Of the drivers surveyed, 83 percent said they park their primary vehicle in the driveway or garage of their private residence, as opposed to in a parking lot, on the street, in a shared garage or some other location.

Perhaps a reflection of America's consumer culture, 62 percent of drivers surveyed said they most often parked in a mall or store parking lot when not at home or work. That's substantially higher than any other location – "on the street" was number two at 17 percent.

"Why EV can help? --Price of oil rises 30 percent in 2010 and could hit $4 a gallon in 2011

 Jan,7,2011
NEW YORK (AP) -- The price of oil is poised for another run at $100 a barrel after a global economic rebound sent it surging 34 percent since May. That could push gasoline prices to $4 a gallon by summer in some parts of the American Territory.

Flying, shipping packages or ordering a pizza, these activities all likely would get more expensive in the new years to come if companies pass along higher energy costs to the consumer. Some economists say rising energy prices will slow economic growth.

The U.S. is the world's largest oil consumer, but since spring prices have been on a roll, primarily because of rising demand in developing countries, especially China. China's oil consumption is expected to rise 5 percent next year; that compares with less than 1 percent growth forecast for the U.S.

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries is capable of raising output, if it needs to, by more than five million barrels per day. Still, Morgan Stanley estimates that the rising energy needs of China and other emerging economies will consume about half of that amount over the next two years. That could create supply pressures similar to those that preceded the price spike of 2008, when oil soared to $147 a barrel.

In the present days when the oil prices are soaring, the demand for electricity as the alternate fuel for vehicles is bound to increase. Vehicles using electricity as fuel are called Electric Vehicles (EVs) or electric cars. In electric vehicles usually the battery is fitted that stores the electricity and runs the motor, which in turn rotates the wheels of the vehicle.

Current Limitations of EVs:

1) The battery has to be charged regularly. The normal working range of battery is about 50-130 miles and it takes between 6-8 hours to fully recharge.

2) Limited charging stations infrastrusture available on roads and highways. In some states like California and Arizona, shopping malls and some stores offer charging facilities, but they are not available everywhere. The trend of providing charging points is surely going to spread across other businesses and states but right now is a serious setback, specially on long distance trips.

3) Though the vehicle running on electricity does not produce pollution, the power plants producing electricity do produce pollution. Contaminant created by thermal power plants are one of the major source of air-pollution. The electricity generated from solar energy will probably be the best solution to curb this effect since it is totally pollution free.

Vehicle manufacturers are striving hard to improve the performance of EVs. They have come up with a number of alternative arrangements like hybrid vehicles, in which electricity and/or gasoline can be used as fuel to run the vehicle.

ZAP stands for Zero Air Pollution®.
With its new product offerings, the Company is positioned to become a leading brand and distribution portal of advanced technology vehicles. ZAP and Jonway are committed to run their business based on a strong philosophical foundation that supports the environment, social responsibility and profitability.
Very soon we will have a clear proof of it with the development of the Green City in Shanghai, Yanpu District.

Jonway Automobile reported sales of over 4,000 gasoline vehicles through the end of September 2010, and projects total sales of over 6,500 vehicles by December 31, 2010. Jonway Automobile reported that wholesale sales prices of the vehicles averaged US$10,000. Jonway Automobile projects year-end revenues for 2010 to increase more than 40% compared to last year with its current gasoline vehicle product line. Jonway Automobile reports that it is debt-free, cash flow positive and able to finance its gasoline product revenue growth at the same rate for 2011.
Under the new equity structure, Jonway Automobile will be 51% owned by ZAP, and 49% by its original parent Jonway Group. This equity ownership transfer was approved by the Chinese government on October 3, 2010. Jonway Automobile plans to ramp up production of the A380 SUV electric vehicle (EV) in the first half of 2011 together with ZAP’s Alias EV by third quarter 2011 at their Sanmen, Zhejiang factory. By combining Jonway Auto’s ISO 9000 manufacturing facilities, capable of delivering over 50,000 vehicles per year, with ZAP’s EV technologies, products and expertise, the company aims to lead the emerging EV fleet market in China.
Alex Wang (Wang Gang) was recently appointed by ZAP’s board to be Co-CEO of ZAP. ZAP Jonway will expand the market to sell both gasoline and EVs from China to rest of the world.

Gasoline prices in U.S. is likely to hit season high. Will lithium become the new oil?

Dec,22,2010
Crude oil prices closed above $90 a barrel for the first time in two years, raising the likelihood that U.S. gasoline prices will reach an average of $3 a gallon for the first Christmas ever.

California already far surpassed that point this season — the average pump price was $3.28 Wednesday, according to the U.S. Energy Department. Experts said it's heading for $4 and more in parts of the state.

A gasoline price spike now would be even worse than it was back in 2008," said Stephen Stone, a 48-year-old computer scientist from Norwalk, because "the economy was booming then and people could afford it more."

Stone has already curbed his use of fossil fuels. He uses a Zap Zebra electric car for trips around town, but it has only a 40-mile range before needing a recharge. He uses a 2006 Town and Country van for longer drives.

Gasoline prices in U.S. is likely to hit season high. Will lithium become the new oil?

Lithium is predicted to turn into the most sought – and fought over – commodity on the planet according to the world’s industry sectors. China, Chile, Australia, America and many more countries are all investing to support the demand for lithium metal, which is set to grow as car makers increasingly look to lithium as a fuel solution.

路是脚踏出来的,历史是人写出来的。人的每一步行动都在书写自己的历史。

Dec,10,2010
I picked out a chinese saying that come from Ji Hongchang, a military officer, as the title of this article It means: Man's every move is to write his history.

"What is the electric car?" make an effort to promote electric cars in marketplace, and this is as a step attempting to make a success in the development history of EVs.

Gary Dodd,Ginny, Kang

We enter an historic time with real, mainstream electric cars poised to come to market.  Still, there seems to be a great deal of confusion and controversy around them, which is one reason why we like the new documentary premiering in Hollywood on December 14, “What is the Electric Car?” but not the only reason.

We really like “What is the Electric Car?” because our very own Ginny is one of the stars of the film.  Yes, THE Virginia (Ginny) Scales-Medeiros, mother of two, entrepreneur, inventor, auto maven and electric car proponent extraordinaire.

The story of how Ginny earned a role in the documentary “What is the Electric Car?” is somewhat ironic.  Ginny is perhaps the most outgoing, gregarious person we work with, and the perfect person to help represent ZAP for its Detroit Auto Show debut.  2010 was the very first year that Detroit’s North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) hosted a display dedicated to electric cars called “Electric Avenue.” ZAP was invited to display its Alias electric car in Detroit as part of the lead-up to the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE.
